Abstract

   There are many differences in the details between two popular Chinese translations of Wuthering Heights, respectively by Yang Yi and Fang Ping. This paper contrasts the two translations and discusses their differences from two perspectives: translation correctness and translation techniques.

   All the translation errors in Chinese translations of Wuthering Heights fall into four categories: misreading the original text, unfamiliarity with the usage of a word, neglect of context, and lack of cultural knowledge. Examples of errors in each category are shown and suggestions to improve understanding are given.

   As for translation techniques, the paper investigates two translation types: literal translation and free translation. Two translation techniques of free translation used by Fang to achieve the best Chinese effect are illustrated. Yang’s literal translation which retains the original flavor is also approved. Cultural default and its solution—attaching footnotes are also discussed.

《呼啸山庄》两个中译本的评析
摘要

《呼啸山庄》的两个流传较广的中译本：杨苡译本（花城出版社）和方平译本（上海译文出版社）在不少细节上存在较大差异，本文引用大量实例，从翻译正确性和翻译技巧两方面对两个译本作了比较与评析。

翻译正确性方面，文章指出了《呼啸山庄》译本中出现的四类翻译错误：原文误读、对词的用法不了解、忽略上下文和缺少文化背景知识。通过译文的比较，指出了杨译中存在的误读和理解上的一些问题，以及方译在理解上的相对深入。

翻译技巧方面，文章引入了两种翻译类型，举例说明杨译以直译为主而方译以意译为主，指出方译使用的两个使译文符合中文习惯的技巧，对杨译运用直译保留原著诗化语言特色方面予以了肯定。文章还讨论了文化背景的缺失问题以及译者的对策——添加注释，并指出了方译在这方面优势。
